Iwanaga Photo Studio

The Iwanaga Photo Studio - named after proprietor Hideki Kiyosaki Iwanaga's hānai family - was located on Lower Makawao Road in Camp 3, Spreckelsville, HI. T he Maui plantation community sought Hideki's professional skills to document important events such as weddings, graduations, sporting events, exhibitions, and funerals, to send back to relatives in their homelands. Getting their picture taken was a special event, with everyone dressed up in their finest clothes to pose for the portrait in the large, professional studio. Hideki is known professionally for the photographs he took documenting plantation and family life on Maui, and is fondly remembered as a kind, generous, compassionate man who accepted barters for payment from those who could not afford the fees.
