Iwanaga Photo Studio & Kiyosaki/Iwamoto Family

The Sugar Museum & The Iwanaga/Kiyosaki Family
Today, the Alexander & Baldwin Sugar Museum in Pu‘unÄ“nÄ“ preserves vintage photographs, including rare glass negatives, attributed to Hideki Iwanaga. His images reveal not only technical mastery but also a deep humanity, illuminating the relationships between owners, managers, and laborers that defined Maui’s sugar plantation history. The Kiyosaki family is proud to see his work honored, and grateful for the museum’s recognition of a legacy rooted in artistry, compassion, and community.

The Alexander & Baldwin Sugar Museum warmly thanks the Iwanaga/Kiyosaki family for their generous collaboration and support in making this project possible. Their partnership has helped us preserve and share the remarkable legacy of Hideki Iwanaga’s photography with the Maui community and beyond. Through their commitment, we are able to honor the family’s history while ensuring that future generations can experience and learn from these powerful images of plantation life.
